Can You Chalk Paint Over Formica. Formica is plastic laminate that is used for counter tops. If you're using chalk paint for a project, you pretty much can't mess it up.
Do not paint over damaged laminate! As long as i clean my piece, i can apply the paint. Other projects i’ve done with chalk paint include painting laminate cabinets.

A specialty primer or paint designed for slick surfaces is required.
As long as i clean my piece, i can apply the paint. My favorite bedroom pieces to paint are from sets that were in many little girls rooms in the 1960’s and 1970’s. If you keep brushing once the paint has started to dry, you will begin to remove chalk paint® from the laminate rather than applying it.

Clean the formica with mineral spirits. Do not paint over damaged laminate! It may take several coats of paint, but be patient.
